Independence Weekend 2009

Before I start in on our list of activities this weekend, let me write a few lines while up on my soapbox. I love America! I feel such a great reverence for our country. I know how blessed I am to live here and to be able to raise my family in this great country. I will always remember my responsibility to our country and live my life accordingly.
Now, to the fun. Good Grief! We had a busy weekend. We spend the entire day of July 3rd with the Randall family and had a great time. Please forgive the pictures, but I promised my parents a full report.

Hot-Air Balloons

Going to see the hot-air balloons in Provo is one of my favorite family traditions. We go every year. It is an early morning, but we love it. This year the weather looked iffy when we left our house at 5:45 am, but it turned into a beautiful day. We arrived just as the balloons were inflating. The kids love watching this process. Kate was memorized by the fire and Enoch always loves to look for the Bank of American Fork Piggy Bank balloon. After the balloons launched, we staked out our spot right on the boundary line. We had a great view for the games. Unfortunately, only a few balloons made it back for the games. Nevertheless, we had a great morning. Dave and Michelle brought breakfast: muffins, fruit, yogurt, juice and milk. We had a great time at the balloons. Mom and Dad called from Kenya while we were there and the morning would have been perfect with them there.

Boating at Utah Lake

We drove directly to Grandpa Dee's house from the balloons. We changed into our swim suits, loaded up the boat and headed to Utah Lake. The lake wasn't too full yet and we got right out and started water skiing. Jarom wake boarded for a bit, Michelle and Greg skied and the rest of us cheered them on and manned the flag. We ate lunch on the boat (Valerie brought sandwiches, chips and cookies). After eating, we inflated the tube and all the kids took turns. Everyone loved riding in the tube. Greg was quite crazy driving the boat when Gavin was in the tube, but Gavin managed to stay in the tube. The kids enjoyed riding in the boat, even though it was a bit squishy. Kate was quite somber while on the boat; she kept falling asleep. This video is so funny - she is sleeping but rocking with the boat. It was a great time. We are so thankful to Dee for letting us borrow his boat. We had a great time!

Fireworks

After cleaning up the boat, we all headed home for naps. I was very ready for a nap by now. Michelle, Dave and Jarom came home with us and we all found a flat surface and took a nap (except for Greg, Gavin and Enoch who don't believe in naps). After sleeping, we started dinner. Greg fixed a terrific Mountain Man Breakfast in the dutch oven and we ate it with leftover muffins and fruit from breakfast. It was a very yummy dinner. The kids had a water fight and played on the zip line. Carson and Enoch were very good to take turns going down. Enoch now goes down backward, upside down. I tell him to just hang on tight! After dinner, we lit off some small fireworks in the road. The kids thought they were great. The little boys liked the sparklers and the girls were more interested in the bucket of water than the fireworks. It wasn't quite dark and so the fireworks were more smokey that sparkly, but it was fun to do them. After putting the kids to bed, the grown-ups played Jarom's new game, Bang! It was a fun game, but we were all quite tired. It was such a fun day!

"Applause, applause!" What a great post! Because of your wonderful patriotic soapbox speech about America, our phone call to you as we were ending our workday, and the glorious pictures of everyone, we practically feel like we were there with you for the Fourth of July! I laughed at the video of sleepy little Kate and the picture of the "boys" who fell asleep on the boat. Thank you! Thank you! Or Asante Sana (as they would say here in Kenya).

It was such a great day (a super exhausting one!) But so much fun! The boat was a great time and Carson still talks about it. Thanks for helping put everything together!

Growing up we used to go to the balloon festival every year. Our really good friends fly the Bank of AF balloons and it was a big tradition to hang out all day with them. I haven't been in years. I keep meaning to, and things get in the way. Next year, really. It looks like you had a fun and busy holiday.

Looks like you all had a blast on the fourth! I love days that you play so hard that you're exhausted at the end.
