I cried this morning. I dropped Gavin off at the Junior High and I cried. It's not even real school yet and I still cried because he is so grown-up and independent and he didn't even want me to come in with him and he shouldn't be this old yet and I worry about him and I love him so much. I know, I'm needier than he is.
Gavin is auditing Algebra during the month of June. He scored high enough on his ACAD test to skip Pre-Algebra and advance to Algebra. A few weeks ago his counselor called and invited him to this summer school class to solidify his math skills and prepare him for Algebra. Gavin wasn't sure he wanted to, but Greg and I talked him into it. It will be a great intro to Algebra, familiarize himself with the Junior High and give him something to do. Besides, if he gets higher than a C, he gets a free trip to the Space Center.
Starting next week, Gavin will also have summer band right after Algebra. He has been practicing his saxophone and he sounds great.
I'm thinking this is a good thing for Mom too. I can gently ease myself into the Junior High scene and not completely fall apart on the first day of school!

We told Gavin you cried and he said "she did, why?". It was cute. I told him how I still remember the day he was born and how excited I was, he is growing up too fast.
There are REALLY great teachers at the Jr. High. Mr. Thayne is everyone's favorite Algebra teacher. All 3 of my kids had him. Also, since Gavin loves science, I think the best teacher in the whole school is Mr Shelley. He only teaches 8th grade science but Gavin might be advanced enough to take it or at least keep him in mind for next year. He's phenomenal, very fun, very educated, LOVES the kids, and is great to communicate on a regular basis with parents through his personal newsletter. He'll do great. You hear a lot of negativity about the Jr. High, but it's all about what you decide to make of it and what you focus on. It's a fun time in their lives even amidst all the challenges for them and for mom :(
Those "firsts" are difficult, but I was always anxious to see who my children were going to become and so I didn't have too much trouble with the firsts. I had a little trouble with the last one to go to kindergarten. That's coming up someday, too--it will probably be harder than this first was. Enjoy each stage--remember how proud you are of Gavin! I love you--you were the "first," too!
Wow, you're old. :p
It sounds like he'll do great. He only has to get a C to get to the Space Center? That should be easy for him.
A free trip to the space center sound like the best deal, great to be familiar with Jr. High. It will put you way ahead of all the other new kids.
LOVE GRANDPA RANDALL
